DELTA

Introduction

The Cambridge ESOL DELTA is recognised worldwide.  The course is open to those who have an initial training qualification in TEFL plus two years' experience.  A good academic background and a substantial range of teaching experience is essential.

Entry Requirements

  • Standard of education allowing entry to higher education
  • Formal course of training (e.g. Cambridge CELTA or Trinity Certificate in TESOL) at either pre-service or early in-service level
  • Minimum of 2 years' full time /1200 hours experience of ELT to adults
  • Be currently employed teaching English to adults in the UK

Study Format

Part-time

The course lasts for 17 weeks but is intensive.  There are two sessions during the week and seven Saturday meetings from 10.00am to 5.00pm.

Additional study and lesson planning will be required at home.

Course Content & Structure

Seminars, workshops and mini lectures including:

  • Analysis of language, including lexical, grammatical and phonological systems
  • The history and development of ELT, including alternative methods
  • Evaluation of teaching techniques for both language and skills
  • Error analysis and correction
  • Constructing and administering tests
  • Needs analysis and syllabus design
  • Evaluation of ELT materials.

Candidates will also be assessed teaching their own classes by LL tutors and a Cambridge examiner (total of 4 hours observation)

Assessment

Language Systems and Language Skills Assignments (LSA's)
There are four of these, each requiring a written background, a lesson plan, the teaching of the class and post lesson written reflection.  Three LSA's will be observed and assessed by Language Link tutors and one by an external assessor.  Two different levels must be included.  Classes must have no fewer than five adult learners and on at least one occasion, 10 or more.

Written Assignments

There are three of these:

  • on designing a course for a group of learners
  • on materials and resources
  • on some aspect of teaching previously unfamiliar to the teacher (e.g. Silent Way, use of computers)

The Extended Assignment

A Case Study giving an in-depth profile of one learner of English (4000 words approximately).

Written Examination

One paper of three and half hours comprising three questions, all of which provide ELT material for the candidate to analyse and comment on. Candidates are no longer required to write formal academic essays.
